An update on Google Friend Connect
December 21, 2015
In 2011, we announced the retirement of Google Friend Connect for all non-Blogger sites. We made an exception for Blogger to give readers an easy way to follow blogs using a variety of accounts. Yet over time, we’ve seen that most people sign into Friend Connect with a Google Account. So, in an effort to streamline, in the next few weeks we’ll be making some changes that will eventually require readers to have a Google Account to sign into Friend Connect and follow blogs.
As part of this plan, starting the week of January 11, we’ll remove the ability for people with Twitter, Yahoo, Orkut or other OpenId providers to sign in to Google Friend Connect and follow blogs. At the same time, we’ll remove non-Google Account profiles so you may see a decrease in your blog follower count.
We encourage you to tell affected readers (perhaps via a blog post), that if they use a non-Google Account to follow your blog, they need to sign up for a Google Account, and re-follow your blog. With a Google Account, they’ll get blogs added to their Reading List, making it easier for them to see the latest posts and activity of the blogs they follow.
So, now we know.
I'm guessing on this one... perhaps you lost followers because your postings were done once in a blue moon..out of sight, out of mind !
ReplyDeleteCould be.
DeleteI read in another blog that blogger is deleting followers who are not on Google +. I don't 'follow' blogs, but rather go to them directly. However, whatever this change is from blogger may explain the number of folks who disappeared.
ReplyDeleteYour followers may have dropped off because of the new google rules. I have tried to post to you after your last November post and couldn't. I was able to post yesterday. Hopefully those other folks are still watching and perhaps just not logged in like me.... don't worry you didn't do anything to hurt anyone. Also your last post explained that you would be out of touch. Just glad you are doing well. Your fan with the broken arm! Go Swankie Wheels!!!!
ReplyDeleteNow I am curious. I have a couple of fans with broken arms right now. But its good to get the feedback. Glad you could post this time. I don't understand all this, not even close. But it is discouraging to have my numbers drop.
DeleteWell, Greg Rubin wrote to say he did not stop following me, so it has to be something that Google or ? did. Others on the above list should know that I did not drop them from my site.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what happened, but it's been a long time since I got a notification about your blog. (If something doesn't get my attention, my mind can lose track of almost anything.)
ReplyDeleteHi Calvin. Did you get a notice on this blog post???
DeleteI am in contact with Carl Palme right now and he also did not drop off my blog site. I wish these companies would stop fixing stuff that is NOT broken. Or at least warn all of us if they are going to make some major changes.
ReplyDeleteSwankie, how did you know who fell off the truck?
ReplyDeleteRoxi, I am so OCD about some stuff. I took a notebook and made a list a few weeks ago, of all the people in the little photos at the top, of people "Join this site" using Google Friend Connect. Then when a bunch dropped off, I went back and checked to see who was missing and noted the new ones as well at the same time. Of course, this probably does not include anyone who signed up to get email notices. So my list and count is probably not real accurate.
DeleteDid you get to read the article below? Google (Blogger owner) is finally forcing blog readers to sign up with Google+ if they want to follow or comment. We knew they would eventually.
DeleteI'm pretty sure Google+ is an easy Blogger widget to install. Does your blog have its own Google+ page yet?
Oh, and I just noticed I've "lost" about 50 followers myself. It's not your readers, it's Google.

ReplyDeleteI heard it is a bid to make Yahoo and other email addresses obsolete, so that everyone if forced to get a Gmail account if they want to stay up to date.
